The city of Tulum originally was named ‘Zama’ which means ‘Place of the Dawning Sun’. As Tulum was amongst one of the first cities in the Mayan Kingdom to receive daily sunlight.
Tulum was built by the Mayans and was one of the very few walled cities in the Mayan Kingdom.
The fortress of Tulum – or at the time ‘Zama’ – is strategically situated on a cliff overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. These walls served as a protection against uninvited sea-intruders.

The first Maya cities began to take shape around 750 BC. By 500 BC, they were already building impressive structures, including large temples with detailed stucco designs.
By the 3rd century BC, the Maya had also developed their own system of hieroglyphic writing — a major step in their rise as one of the most advanced ancient civilizations in the Americas.
